2015 American Turners National Festival (Turnfest)
Hosted by Aurora Turners
July 21st - July 25th
This Festival marks the dawn of a new era. We are implementing our new on-line registration. Included in this issue of Turner Topics is a sample for you to review. It is easy to complete and should eliminate any incorrect entries. Take a few minutes to review the sample form so you can gather your information before starting the registration process.
The link to the registration form can be found at americanturners.org in the Festival section. Payment can be made either using your Paypal account, or using your credit card. Entry fees are $20.00 for athletic competition and $5.00 for cultural competition. If you are registering for both athletic and cultural you will only pay $20.00. Children under the age of 18, whose parents are not members, are allowed to register, however they must pay the additional $5.00 non-member fee. (All adults must be members and have a valid membership number) The registration deadline is June 6, 2015. If you register after June 6 but before June 16, 2015 you must pay an additional $20.00 late fee. Absolutely no registrations will be accepted after June 16, 2015.
Once you submit your registration you will receive an e-mail confirming your submission. This e-mail will also show all the events you signed-up for. Please print this e-mail and bring it with you to the Festival.
If you are the designated captain or Society coordinator for Volleyball, Basketball, Swimming Relays or Track Relays you will also need to submit a roster, which includes all players’ names for that specific team. The preferred method of submitting a roster is on an Excel spreadsheet. The completed roster(s) should be e-mailed it to Fred Sontag at email@example.com. If you are unable to create an Excel spreadsheet, then please print out the appropriate roster located on the Festival webpage, fill it in and mail it to Michelle Lesperance at 8012 Town Hall Rd., Kewaskum, WI 53040. Rosters need to be submitted no later than June 16, 2015.
Anyone entering cultural items must register on-line and then also mail your Cultural Entry Form to Sue Knisley.
If you have any questions regarding the on-line registration or anything else regarding the Festival, feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 920-980-8593. Remember to print your e-mail confirmation and bring it to the Festival. See you in July, 2015 in Aurora.3 on 3 BASKETBALL
We are offering 3 on 3 Basketball as a new event at this Festival. The rules are:
Youth Boys – ages 7 to 13, Men – 14 to 29, Seniors – 30 and over
Youth Girls – Ages 7 to 13, Women – 14 to 29, Seniors – 30 and over
Each team will have a maximum of 5 players (3 playing and 2 subs). Seniors and Youths will be allowed 6 players per team (3 playing and 3 subs). Each player will receive one participation point for their Society.
Games are played to 11 points by 1’s. There are no 3 point shots. Games will be played on 1 half of a full size court. 2 games can be played at the same time on one regulation sized court. Substitution of players can occur at any time during the game. Each team will receive one 1 minute timeout per game. (Seniors and Youths will be allowed 2) The ball must be checked by an opposing player before it is put into play. The player must pass the ball at the top of the court to begin play. After a basket has been scored or a foul called, a player must put the ball in play from above the foul key. All held balls will be put into play from atop the foul key, as well, possession given alternately to each team. On defensive rebounds or steals, players must return the ball by dribble or pass across the top of the key before a basket may be attempted. Once across the line, they do not have to pass the ball before shooting. After a basket, the team scored upon will put the ball in play. No make-it, take-it. Fouls will be called by participating players for ages 14-29 & 30+. Adult players from other teams will call fouls for ages 7-13. All fouls will result in the ball being taken out at the top of the key.
Tournament Structure: (Based on the number of participants.)
6 teams: Each team would play every other team once in the preliminaries. The record of each team after these games will then seed the teams in a single elimination tournament to decide a winner.
12 teams: The 12 teams would draw into 2 divisions/pools of 6. Each team would play every other team once in the preliminaries. The record for each team after these games will then seed the teams in a single elimination tournament to decide the winner of each division. The winners of each division will play in a final game to decide the tournament champion. The 2nd place finishers in each division will play for 3rd place.
We will be offering a one-day Golf scramble during the Festival. It will be a fun way to get out on the golf course and still earn points for your Society. You are required to register on-line and pay the appropriate fee, as well as pay for your greens fees the day of the scramble. Teams can consist of 2-4 players and can consist of men or women. Top finishing teams will earn ribbons at the event. You can contact Kevin Glock at email@example.com any questions.
Let me explain the many options you have to play Volleyball at the National Festival. Keep in mind that you can register to play on as many teams as you are eligible, as long as there is no conflict in the schedule. If you have any questions regarding Volleyball, please contact Phil Klabunde prior to registering on-line at firstname.lastname@example.org or 302-998-7690. He will be able to guide you through the various options, as well as help you get on a conglomerate team if your Society doesn’t have a full team.

I have mailed the instructions and a DVD of the Marching and Mass Drill to many Societies. If anyone has not received a copy and is interested in their Society participating, please contact me. Any Society that plans on having a group compete in the Marching and Mass Drill will have to provide their own hand flags. The flags are to be approximately 8”x12” attached to a 12” dowel. Also, each member participating in the Mass Drill must order the official Festival (white) t-shirt when registering on-line for the Festival. Each Society will have the option of choosing their own color of shorts to wear. Remember that all members of your Society participating in the Mass Drill must be wearing the same color/style of shorts. This is the first time that we will be allowing the Societies to make their own choice of shorts and I am asking that everyone chooses appropriately.
ROSTERS FOR ALL TEAM EVENTS AND RELAYS
Societies that have teams for Volleyball and/or Basketball or relays for Swimming and/or Track must have their team captain complete a team roster. It is preferred that a team roster be in Excel. If you are unable to create a roster in Excel, then team rosters can be found on the American Turner webpage located near the link for the on-line registration form. The completed roster(s) must be sent to Fred Sontag at email@example.com for Relays, Phil Klabunde at firstname.lastname@example.org for Volleyball, Nick Barts at email@example.com for Basketball, or send by US Mail to Michelle Lesperance at 8012 Town Hall Rd., Kewaskum, WI 53040.
